Surprise Party is the first episode of Season 4. In this episode, Jake thinks everyone forgot his birthday.

Plot[]

It is Jake's birthday, but Jake sighs because he didn't get a birthday card because he thinks everyone has forgotten his birthday. When he hears happy whistling, Jake thinks he hears the postman coming. But when the whistling stops, Jake feels disappointed and sits at the table with a cupcake with a candle on to cheer himself up. Jake makes a wish he could have a big birthday party with all his friends, balloons, jelly, party games and a big cake, he then blows the candle out. He is still depressed about not getting his birthday card, until he then hears the doorbell ring. Jake opens the door revealing Kipper, who is the one whistling with delight, but not the postman. Kipper has come to pick up Jake and take him to the park while thinking it's a beautiful day outside. When Jake and Kipper are gone, it was revealed that Kipper was actually sent by Tiger, Pig, and Arnold to distract him so they could set up a surprise birthday party for Jake. Kipper and Jake play on the seesaw, until Jake admits that nobody remembered his birthday today, not even Kipper, who assures him they all know it's his birthday, telling him his friends got a special birthday surprise for him. Later, Kipper tells Jake not to peek on the way home from the park. Jake asks Kipper if his birthday surprise is a little kitten, but Kipper tells Jake he'll find out soon enough. Jake also thinks his birthday surprise is a ball or a jigsaw puzzle. Jake opens the door and finds the house dark. Then the lights turn on. Everyone except Arnold wear party hats. Kipper brings the birthday cake with cream, sweets and candles over to the table. Under the table, Arnold blows the balloon up big. Tiger tells Jake to blow the candles out, Pig bets Jake can't blow them all out in one go and Kipper tells Jake not to forget to make a wish. The balloon explodes. Jake, Kipper, Pig and Tiger laugh.

Availability[]

This episode has not been readily accessible online in high quality due to its very limited release. The episode was not available on DVD in the U.S., Canada, or the U.K., but it did appear on a U.K. VHS release, "Looking After Arnold and Other Stories", as well as on an Australian DVD with the same title as the episode. Both of these sources have yet to be uploaded online as of 2023, and most uploads of the episode have been low quality camera recordings the episode.

In September 2023, a high quality rip of the episode appeared on the Internet Archive, albeit with a Jim Jam ident. It remains the highest quality release of the episode readily available online as of 2023. The upload can be found here.

In February 2024, Fisher-Price officially uploaded it to their YouTube account, with corrected colors and no ident. However like their other Season 4 uploads, the audio is in mono (left channel only), the picture is slightly stretched vertically, and quality is lower.
